vNews edition 2 round 152

Hi and welcome to a shortened version of vNews.

As some of you may know I, viraxje, was bankrupted this round.
Turns out having a newspaper is a lot less interesting when you are bankrupt.
I found it difficult myself to still log in and keep encouraging players to write articles for the paper, Hence also this short edition(which I apologize for).
To be fair I haven’t done much of the work this round,  I am very grateful to both Riviat and Mystq this round for keeping the activity going behind the scenes. Actually Riviat managed to write articles his fourth edition in a row now, which is quite the achievement! Therefore Riviat is winner of the vNews Writer of the Round award!
I also wish to thank Mystq for publishing edition 1 this round whilst I was on vacation.

Since my holiday period is coming up I won’t be able to spend as much time on vNews as I have been able to last round.
However I do find it very beneficial for the English community to also have a newspaper in English around, therefore I ask you to contact me if you’re interesting in helping out ensuring the continuity of vNews.

Opening Word 1st Edition of Round 152

Welcome back to another vNews! The first week of Round 152 got off to a good start in trade. Many new players returned and showed excitement for the round.

Politically minded citizens were bustling to share their opinions this week as the Federals decided to do away with the former High Council and Federal Union and replace them with the Council of Veterans (CoV). At first, a sense of chaos ensued, as some voiced their confusion and concerns. Then tempers flared a bit as citizens argued about how things should be and how they could be. loco_tazz, Tuned, and Mystq are tasked with operating the CoV. Who knows what will happen next?

Crime rates in Virtua are stated to be at an ‘all-time high’. Many citizens witnessed as an Officer and multiple players were shot bankrupt in town. Over 100 shots could be heard through the night. Bank busts and personal robberies have ensued, putting the country on high alert. Without enough Officers to watch over and protect all three cities, what new crimes with be reported this next week?

An exciting NEW development appeared this round; for the first time in Miniconomy history, Premium Members are able to select multiple lots from which to harvest resource. This new feature saves time, but comes with risk as excess resources that do not fit in one’s warehouse will be lost forever. Many watched in excitement as this new element was revealed.

This edition features multiple articles on the above topics and more, plus statistics, charts and an interview! Read on and enjoy.

What does Woshiempire() have to say?

I welcomed Woshiempire() here today to sit for a short interview about his opinions on multiple topics. As a newer player, his opinion is valuable. As Vice President of Virtua, his experience can be helpful for others who are interested in government affairs. What was meant to be short and sweet turned out to be informative and long, as I found that Woshiempire() has passionate opinions and was eager to share them with us…

Mystq: First, I want to know what made you run for office last round. Why did you have an interest in politics?

Woshiempire(): Well, I’ve always had an interest in political-economic games; that’s why I play MC (Miniconomy). It offers more to do than just trading and I believe that communication and making yourself known (in politics and in conversation) will be helpful in trading. I believe that economies do not work in isolation; mutual gains and cooperation between players is essential.

What other games of this style have you played and how does Miniconomy rank compared to those games?

I’ve played quite a few, some that I’ve already forgotten the name of. In terms of economic module, MC ranks better for trading simplicity and also free market concept. Some games only allow for an average market price and prices cannot be determined by players themselves, but instead have a generated average market place.

However, for the political module, MC does lack much as compared to other games. The political function is too basic and not as deeply linked to the game. There doesn’t seem to be much political game function other than player-driven “forums”. On top of that, there is not much of an “International Game Feature” such as in other games.

I think the credit pricing is reasonable. I choose not to play other games because of expense.

Excellent Feedback! So overall, would Miniconomy make it onto your top 10 list of favorite economic games, considering all of the aspects?

Yes, but there aren’t many economic games available online.

I’ll be more direct. Would you consider Miniconomy to be your favorite game? You’ve been willing to devote many hours. Have the social aspects influenced that decision?

That is why Miniconomy motivates me to try again. My first experience of MC was around round 50. At that time, the game was quite daunting for new players and time consuming for raw materials traders. I made many mistakes.

I do now consider MC as my favorite economic game due to its uniqueness, but I believe that the game needs updates as well (It is 99% the same even after several years). The social aspects motivate me to devote more time. If it is just a trading game, without interaction, the game does not entice me to play. I would just “click and logout”. I believe that a game community is important for players to feel involved, then they will spend time and money on it. No one will spend money on a game in which they mindlessly trade and logout.

This is why I feel the education system is important. The game community and culture will have an impact on how players feel involved. If players cannot be involved, they feel left out. They will think that jobs only cater to veterans and that they, as new players, won’t fit in anywhere.
I think the education system should move beyond just getting degrees and renewing them. It should be a place where Veterans identify new potential players and try to get them more involved in the game, influencing them to become a Premium Member.

I also think that the National Governments should have more in-game features to support their roles. Some examples would be: preventing other nationality’s products selling outside one’s own borders, being able to have closed borders for personalities, and imposing tariffs on products coming from overseas, if they are allowed. I think that these 3 features will help define what a country is and allow players to have more control over international trade, bringing new dimension to international politics and trade.

Thank you for all of your feedback. It’s been a pleasure talking with you.

As we can see, Woshiempire() is very passionate about these topics. He is taking his job as Vice President very seriously and considering the political aspects here. He is obviously taking his player status very seriously, as well.

Viva la Virtua

Mystq woke up to the announcement of another competition, a triathlon of sorts. She smiled at her countrymen and looked fondly at her crown. She held the title as the previous winner. If someone won this competition other than Virtua, the crown would be taken from her. This, she could not allow.

She familiarized herself with the current rules and tasks and set to work enlisting the help of her fellow Virtuans. DJ Ricky and Viraxje knew how important it was for the three strong Virtuan cities of the Federation to win this competition. They plotted together, making trade deals, building banners to flood the streets, and gathering as many alarms as could be found across the lands.

It wasn’t always easy. There were bumps in the road from the beginning. Virtuans cannot always agree on how things should be done, but ultimately Mystq could not allow failure.

She won the first leg of the competition, somehow selling the appropriate amount of things to magically score the most points. Some would call it luck, but she didn’t believe in luck. Mystql powers were at play, but her secrets could never be shared.

As her friends set to work donning the town with her banner, more citizens took up the cause and joined their efforts, decorating the shops and lining the streets with her name. Mystq for Virtua! Even the Newspaper included advertisements for her great country to win the final prize. Things were looking golden, but there were some things Mystq had to accomplish on her own.

She set her mind on a goal and traveled far from the Federation, disappearing for a full 2 days. Friends and countrymen worried if she’d been lost in the wilderness. Would she ever come back? She couldn’t get back to her shops and without pumps and engines, machines were scarce. Across the land, trade was affected because of her disappearance. She was wandering with her husband, Aximili, looking for something special.

They came to a strange land with strange customs. As Aximili grew weary of travelling, Mystq begged him to make her a sign of home. She missed it so. Not able to see her so sad, he began working. He played with fire and spark and amazed the onlookers. Though it took time to create something pleasing to her, Aximili finally saw Mystq’s face light up as she saw her country’s name and flag, permanently shaped into metal. She would cherish it always. It gave her the courage to keep searching for what she needed to win the final part of the competition.

Finally, she stumbled upon what her heart desired: in the land far away from the Federation, in a place called ‘Texas’, Mystq found the old market booth of a screwdriver trader from years past. Long ago, Mystq knew this trader as Kitten; they were old friends. Kitten had kept her small shop open and stocked and was happy to hear of Mystq’s ventures.

She gladly put up the new banner, supporting the great country of Virtua. As Mystq said her goodbyes and headed back home to the Federation, she took a final picture of old Kitten’s shop to bring back and share, giving Virtuans hope that even outside of our world, support for Virtua can be found.

She was so glad to return to the land. Her fellow citizens welcomed her and looked over her treasures that she brought back. She gently touched her crown again, remembering her purpose, and lifted her arms high. Virtuans raised their voices with her in the call of victory: Viva la Virtua!

Overview day 7/21

Welcome back to vNews!

This round, we are back in business. Due to unforseen circumstances we were unable to provide any news the last round. Most interesting news of last round was the request of Ibishan President CIT to the Virtuan Council to start discussing a fusion between the two countries. CIT felt forced to this decision due to the long lasting lack of serious activity on the tropical island. The Virtuan Council was interested in the fusion, but were unable to discuss it any further. The Federal Government declared it impossible to join the two countries.
Rumour has it that CIT might hand Ibisha now to the Alvarez clan, to be continued…

So let’s continue with an overview on Virtua.

The Virtuan economy runs smoothly and steady if not fast. All products are well covered, but there have been some issues about shops remaining empty for some time. Good news for the shops of Federal Government, bad news for Virtua’s best traders as this round will not provide a Virtuan winner.

The political scene of Virtua is stable with not much to report on, possibly because the main politicians of late have became even more inactive. Although, Virtuan President Bleech tried to improve the situation by hiring the new face asdfe as Consul of Education. As asdfe has no degrees himself, he immediately hired Bleech as National Teacher to ensure the educational standards. The collaboration between the two players is good.

On the International scene, rumour has it that there is a lot more political mudfighting going on than is to be expected. There have been heard a lot of shouting and namecursing from inside the chairmanless Federal Union until the Federal Government took over. For now, all discussion seems to be halted until there is an adequate Chairman again.

This round, your vNews reported has travelled around for a bit to get the latest insights from one of the more experienced people around. First off is gelaarsdekat!

It was quite difficult to actually find his house, if you can even call it a house. The taxi dropped me off at the address, in the middle of the forest of Centropolis. No house in sight. I call gelaarsdekat and his secretary tells me to go down the street for a bit and walk up the lane to the house. The lane was flanked by fountains and trees of at least 50 meters. After walking several kilometres, I finally reached the place gelaarsdekat lives, but I wouldn´t call it a house. With a house it won´t take you a 1 hour walk just to walk around it… When entering the mansion, the largesse of wealth becomes apparent. Now the question remains, is this all a facade of decadency, or will I be in the presence of a financial mastermind?

You are criminal in the extremely tolerant Virtua, how does this work for you?
I wouldn’t describe myself as a criminal, the only reason I went into doing crimes is because of the achievement list and someday I’d like to be on top of it. Most of the Virtuans respect me as much as I respect them and in my opinion I think we work well together.  I think that it’s different if I was a criminal that would just shoot people for fun, that would have been a whole different story.

Is it financially enticing to do crime in Virtua?
I guess it is, as crime in Virtua is not very expensive. In the past, I have argued against several Presidents to put a 10% net worth fine when you get caught in shooting, because I think it is too easy to bankrupt smaller players which is not fun for them.
Other than that, I believe that in some aspects crime should be a bit attractive so that the Federation makes some money from credit sales. That is why I did a small test last round and had four of my skills put on crime to start shoplifting. I did 50 attempts to shoplifting and managed to succeed 39 of them. So, with skills, crime is very attractive (mind that all those robberies where in shops where no officer was nearby or any cams involved).

The Virtuan trade seems slow but steady this round, what do you think that should be improved next round?
As you may know, in the past 7 rounds I have had 3 top 2 spots of which one win.  I believe that Virtuan trade only starts on day three, after the subsidies have been handed out. Virtua struggles to get an aggressive or good start at round start. When the round start for Virtua is better, I believe that Virtua could win almost every round. Just like every round Virtuas trade gets better day by day until day 14. That is when trade starts to slow down in the whole federation. I also think that Virtua could improve on the amount of skyscraper tenants build each round. I think that Virtua has not ever reached over half of the amount of skyscraper tenants build compared to Cyberia in a round.

Do you think the opening of a Virtuan harbour last week a blessing or a curse?
I myself had warned the Virtuan players not to open a harbour until the Virtuan economy was ready to. I encourage international trade, but I would like to put the Virtuan economy in front. If Virtua is not able to export their products, then we shouldn’t build a harbour. Right now Ibisha and Cyberia, who had a great first week, are out of resources and come and get it in Virtua. In my opinion, opening the harbour today, after playing a week, or maybe on Monday would’ve been a better scenario for Virtua.

With this answer, his second expensive-looking cigar is done. His secretary reminds gelaarsdekat he has another appointment, one he doesn’t want to miss. Gelaarsdekat seems to remember and concludes his goodbye with whispering he’ll have a nice interview with his mistress now…
